WE TOLD YOU SO
Just as we predicted in December, the Bredesen administration’s “technical corrections” legislation includes tax increases
NASHVILLE, TN - Just as they did last year when they slapped a new tax on propane used in your backyard barbecue grill, Gov. Bredesen’s administration is planning to raise taxes again this year under the guise of making “technical corrections” to the state’s tax code.
Among the tax increases, er, “technical corrections,” to be sought by the Bredesen administration are provisions that will result in higher tax bills for some small businesses and small farmers.
“Last year, even though they had more than $1 billion in surplus revenue, the Bredesen administration used the ‘technical corrections’ legislation to hit backyard barbecuers with $3 million in new taxes. This year, they’ve got a $500 million deficit, so we’re not surprised they are looking for stealthy ways to raise taxes again,” said Bill Hobbs, communications director for the Tennessee Republican Party.
“Revenue Commissioner Reagan Farr commented to the Knoxville News Sentinel that, ‘It never ceases to amaze me the hoops people will go through to try to avoid taxes.’ Well, maybe people wouldn’t feel so compelled to find ways to pay less taxes if Democrats weren’t always looking for ways to raise taxes,” Hobbs said.
This is the fifth straight year the Bredesen administration has filed a “technical corrections” bill to increase tax revenue.
