Devaney on the Radio: “I Don’t Think That the Arrogance of the Democrats That We’re Seeing Right Now Is Going to Change”
In a radio interview today on Coffee County’s WMSR 1320AM, Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Chris Devaney said that Washington Democrats’ arrogance is unlikely to change despite increasing anger amongst Americans. He also discussed the Tennessee Republican Party’s efforts to recruit conservative candidates that best represent voters in the Volunteer State and the way in which the current political landscape has begun to mirror events of 1993 and 1994. Key excerpts from Chairman Devaney’s interview follow:
DEVANEY ON WASHINGTON DEMOCRATS’ INCREASING ARROGANCE:
“I don’t think that the arrogance of the Democrats that were seeing right now is going to change. I think they are going to continue to try to force this government health care plan on us, their going to continue to try to force cap-and-trade on us and continue to try to find ways to have the government meddle in our lives. I just don’t see that arrogance changing. The U.S. House of Representatives is controlled by… very liberal Democrats… When you poll Nancy Pelosi in Tennessee, it is not a very pretty picture. And Obama’s numbers are – they aren’t much better.”
DEVANEY ON TENNESSEE VOTERS GRAVITATING TOWARD CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES:
“[W]e’re looking for people who have a common-sense perspective on things that want to stand by the principles of the Republican Party which are the principles of limited government, individual responsibility, traditional values, those kind of things because when Republicans run on those issues and they believe in those issues – that’s the kind of folks we want, that believe in those issues – we win. And I think that’s the kind of people Tennesseans tend to gravitate to, people with those core conservative values and they may not describe themselves as Republicans necessarily but they have those kinds of principles. They don’t want government telling them everything they need to do, they do believe that a person can pull themselves up by their boot straps and really make something out of themselves and their families. That’s what people want. That’s what they want in their elected officials and the kind of candidates they want.”
DEVANEY ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL LANDSCAPE MIRRORING 1993-1994:
“Back in the early 90’s I was working in the United States Senate. I was doing media affairs for U.S. Senators and I was watching what was going on in the country and we were fighting the Clinton health care plan, Hilarycare. And we were really just educating constituents about it and so in that New Jersey election Christine Todd Whitman won by one percent in ‘93 and George Allen won by I think it was 17 points. Well, this time around, Chris Christie won by four points and McDonald won by 18 points in Virginia. To me, that’s even a stronger victory for the Republicans this time than it was back in ‘93.”
