Mike Who? Another Prediction Gives McWherter Slim Chance in Gubernatorial Bid

Democrat Gubernatorial Candidate Mike McWherter hasn’t received any good news lately as far as predictions for the 2010 elections go. He might be the presumptive Democrat nominee, but according to predictions about the general election, he is not going to be the next governor of Tennessee. The latest to forecast Mike McWherter’s loss in November is University of Virginia Center for Politics Director Larry Sabato. In his latest “crystal ball” report, he had this to say about the Tennessee gubernatorial race:

Tennessee-Gov. Phil Bredesen (D) is term limited. This one is unquestionably leaning Republican, but which Republican? Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam has the inside track, though Congressman Zach Wamp is fighting hard, among others. Democrats simply don’t have a top-drawer choice for 2010, with Mike McWherter, son of former Democratic Gov. Ned McWherter, as the party’s nominee… Instinctively, most political observers believe the Volunteer State will be volunteering for the GOP in 2010. LIKELY REPUBLICAN TAKEOVER.

Sabato is just the latest to deliver the McWherter camp bad news. Late last month, the Washington Post didn’t exhibit much confidence in McWherter’s chances this fall:

And in Tennessee, Mike McWherter, son of former governor Ned Ray McWherter, is the likely Democratic gubernatorial nominee but doesn’t have much chance of claiming the state’s top office in the fall.

These predictions come as no surprise considering Mike McWherter is facing an extremely solid field of Republican candidates whose messages of limited government, individual responsibility and lower taxes are resonating with voters across the state. This is not Mike McWherter’s year in Tennessee, but as you can see, you don’t have to take our word for it.
