Mcwherter Says Immigration Policy Should Be Left to Federal Government, States Shouldn’t Be Involved
While a resolution praising the state of Arizona for passage of recent immigration legislation languishes on Gov. Phil Bredesen’s desk, Democrat Mike McWherter has outlined a different way in which Tennessee can approach immigration reform. Put simply – do nothing. In fact, he doesn’t believe that Tennessee has a place in the debate at all. Not surprisingly, the lone Democrat in the race thinks the federal government is best suited to solve our state’s immigration issues. According to WSMV, McWherter had this to say about immigration reform:
| “I really think the immigration issue is a federal issue, and what we need is a much better federal policy to protect our borders,” said Mike McWherter. “It’s got to be solved on a federal level.” |
McWherter’s comments are a startling indication of how he would handle the issue of immigration reform in our state if he were to become governor. McWherter is so hands-off on the topic that he doesn’t even address it on the issues page of his campaign website. The fact is, sitting back and waiting for the federal government to possibly act isn’t an acceptable solution to any issue facing the state of Tennessee.
Clearly Mike McWherter isn’t ready to tackle important matters facing our state and believes Tennesseans should simply trust that the federal government will solve our problems. Whether or not Tennesseans agree with Arizona law, most agree the issue of illegal immigration within our borders must be addressed. With his recent comments, Mike McWherter has proven he’s not the man that’s going to lead Tennessee in those efforts.
